Why is fluoride beneficial?
Fluoride therapy has been proven to help reduce patients risk of develping cavities. In low concentrations, such as fluoride in over the counter toothpaste and mouthwash, fluoride inhibits the growth of bacteria. In high
concentrations, such as the professional treatment you get in office, fluoride actually kills the bacteria that can lead to cavities. It is recommended that patients use low concentrations of fluoride daily and high concentrations
of fluoride 2-4 times a year.
In the past, a fluoride foam was applied by tray for 2 minutes. The professional treatment we use in our office is called fluoride varnish, and is applied in a thin film that sticks to the tooth surface for 4-6 hours. Patients are able to eat and drink immediately after application. Come see us and ask your dental hygienist for your preventive fluoride treatment today!
